LBL Polo/Gold’s Dragoons pulled out a 6-4 win over Hutchinson/Whiskey Victor on Sunday, October 2 in front of an enthusiastic crowd of spectators on Whitney Field. The tournament had four teams, and there was a three-way tie in match play, with the finalists and Lithoprint/Blessing Plantation all notching 2-1 records. With the lowest number of net goals, however, Lithoprint/Blessing Plantation was out.

Although Hutchinson/Whiskey Victor was a strong team featuring the outstanding teamwork of Geoff Cameron (2 goals) and Jason Wates (3 goals) along with the support of Whitney Vogt (.5) and Charlie Hutchinson III (.5), LBL Polo/Gold’s Dragoons came into the finals as the favorite to win. In the first place, the team was highly competitive, powered by a tough combination of professionals, Luis Galvan (3) and Marcos Onetto (4) who have been to the awards table in Aiken dozens of times in the past few years. Alison Patricelli (0), the LBL patron, also has teams in the 8-goal and the 12-goal and always comes to play. Richard Terbrusch of Gold’s Dragoons has taken advantage of his -1 rating to get on a lot of winnings teams this year. In the second place, in match play, LBL Polo/Gold’s Dragoons was pretty dominant, winning their first two games against Hyde Park/Willow Branch (9-6) and Hutchinson/Whiskey Victor (9-4). Their one loss to Lithoprint/Blessing Plantation came last Friday after they were already assured a berth in the finals, unless they had lost by more than 6 goals.

True to form, LBL/Gold’s came out strong, leading all the way into the third chukker, when Hutchinson/Whiskey Victor tied the game briefly at 4 goals apiece. But in the fourth LBL/Gold’s drove to goal relentlessly to pull ahead by two. The clock ran out before Hutchinson/Whiskey Victor could make a comeback.

Luis Galvan was named the MVP while Jason Wates’s third chukker horse Remy was the BPP. Halftime entertainment was provided by girls from the Shea Rose Vaulters, Marvin, North Carolina who demonstrated various moves on two vaulting horses and one vaulting pony.

Polo action continues this week with games in the Corey Cup 4 goal, the USPA Officer’s Cup 8 goal and the USPA National Copper Cup 12 goal. The Copper Cup semifinals will be held on Friday, with the final next Sunday at 3pm on Whitney Field. It is likely to be one of the best games of the season, so you won’t want to miss it!
