Crestview, the defending champion of the USPA National Copper Cup 12 goal, won a decisive 14-8 victory over LBL Polo in the semifinals on Friday, assuring themselves of a berth in the finals. There, they will face Bendabout, Gillian Johnston’s powerhouse team featuring Del Walton and the father and daughter duo of Julio and Hope Arellano. Bendabout, the 2010 Copper Cup winner, had a similarly decisive semifinals victory on Thursday, winning 14-6 over SD Farms.
Exactly when this final match will take place is still to be determined. The Friday semifinal was played as Hurricane Matthew swept up the coast towards South Carolina. The match started under cloudy skies and finished frankly in the rain. Although Aiken is far enough inland to escape the brunt of the storm, Matthew veered to the west of its expected track overnight, dumping several inches of rain in the area. Conditions this fall have been fairly dry, and Aiken’s sandy soil is renowned for its drainage, making it possible to play here after storms that would close other polo clubs for a week. However, the rain may have been too heavy even for Aiken. The finals were originally scheduled for 3pm on Sunday afternoon. They may have to be postponed. The club and field manager will make a determination on Sunday morning. The polo hotline will have the answers then: 803-643-3611.
