Bill Raab Assumes Manager Role

Aiken Polo Club is pleased to announce that Bill Raab has agreed to assume the role of manager of Aiken Polo Club. Bill has been involved in polo since he was in junior high school when he took a job walking hots at the Detroit Polo Club. As a teenager, he learned to play polo, galloped racehorses and rode bulls and broncs in the rodeo. Then, working in Florida and elsewhere, he moved from groom, to playing groom, to player. As a 5-goaler he was on successful teams in top tournaments in the United States, England and Argentina along with some of the best players in the world.  Today, he is a USPA certified umpire with a reputation for making green horses. Bill and his wife Michelle bought their farm in Wagener, Broken Arrow, almost two decades ago. There, they have numerous horses, a practice field and a jumping arena.

For the past eight years, Bill has been running Wagener Polo Club in eastern Aiken County where he has organized popular practices as well as tournaments at the 2-6 goal level. When he comes on as manager of APC, he will be merging Wagener’s practices with Aiken’s, while managing Wagener’s two spring 6 goal tournaments (held at New Bridge Polo Club) separately from a planned schedule of 2, 4 and 6 goal tournaments at Aiken Polo Club. He hopes that having one manager for these two separate schedules of tournaments will help resolve player conflicts and lead to better tournament participation and cooperation at both clubs.

The definitive spring schedule for Aiken Polo Club is still under development. Bill does say, however, that practices are planned for traditional Wagener Polo days (Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday mornings) rather than traditional Aiken Polo days (Wednesday, Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings.) This practice schedule tends to work better for people who come in from out of town for a Friday-Sunday tournament and want to maximize their playing time over the weekend.

If you have questions or would like to talk to Bill, please contact him via email (bkrpolo@aol.com) or by phone: 561-719-3381. The Aiken Polo Club hotline remains 803-643-3611. The Wagener Polo Club hotline is 803-566-8610.
